How to Successfully Sell Products on the Walmart Marketplace in 2021

So, you’ve decided to expand your consumer reach by selling on Walmart Marketplace. Congratulations! This is an exciting business move that could potentially bring in a serious number of new customers. You’ve seen how great their eCommerce growth in 2020 was, weighed the pros and cons, and you want a piece of the action. There are several important pieces of information to know when it comes to selling on Walmart Marketplace. Here, we’ll explore how to not just sell your products on Walmart Marketplace, but be successful in doing so.

Tip #1 – Entry isn’t always easy

Because Walmart Marketplace is still growing, it’s important to note that they are more selective about the sellers that are approved on the platform. Unlike Amazon, which allows anyone to register as a vendor, sellers must apply to sell on WMP. They will only be approved to WMP if they have a positive track record on other marketplaces.

Here’s the process you can expect once approved according to Walmart:

Acceptance can take up to 2 weeks and merchants can expect an onboarding process lasting between 2 and 4 weeks.

Tip #2 – Win that buy box

When a product is listed, the seller has 2 options: Create a new listing if the item doesn’t already exist on the marketplace or share an existing listing for a product that isn’t unique. If an item is sharing a listing, it is imperative that your item wins the buy box as it’s the first pricing and option that customers will see.

The buy box is won by having an item in stock and being the most price competitive (lowest) available. To ensure the win, sellers should also offer free shipping with their item since it’s factored in as a part of the item’s total price.

Tip #3 – Fulfillment is a personal affair

Sellers on the WMP have multiple options when it comes to fulfillment. While most of the available options require the seller to arrange fulfillment on their own, there is now a Walmart Fulfillment Service (WFS) available to those that meet the minimum requirements. The requirements include:

  • Products must ship to Walmart fulfillment centers from within the United States
  • No perishable or regulated products
  • Maximum product weight of 30 lbs
  • Maximum product dimensions: 25” x 20” x 14”

This fulfillment service is looking to compete with Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). WFS offers guaranteed free 2-day delivery on orders over $35 and an easy, hands-off approach for the seller by packing and shipping the item(s) as well as handling customer support and returns. 

If you qualify, WFS is a good option to consider as it’s given Buy Box preference and helps sellers capture higher rankings in search.

Tip #4Put those listings to work

Once you’ve prepared your catalog and set up things on the back end it’s time to go live with your product listings. The most important thing a seller can do for their listings is to set them up in a way that makes the listing do the work for them. It saves the seller an abundance of hassle and creates efficiency across their catalog. 

Customers will likely utilize the WMP’s search box similarly to how they would use Google’s so it’s important to research and be consistent with product keywords. While too many words can work against you, it is crucial to your product’s searchability that you use as many keywords as possible in your title, description, and highlighted features.
